Zach and Julia: Backyard Summer Wedding

Zach and Julia were supposed to get married in May—but the Covid shut down forced them to postpone their wedding. Despite the August heat (and a few run ins with some ants) their backyard farm wedding was GORGEOUS! Julia’s color palette was soft, romantic, and stunning—and Social Sisters Designs did an INCREDIBLE job on the florals, decor, and really making Julia’s vision a reality!

I always love working weddings with Jess Boulter—she’s a fantastic coordinator and she kept everything running smoothly at Julia’s family farm. The farm was a picturesque backdrop complete with a pond, oak trees with leafy canopies and cattle and horses scattered about. With a white tent for the reception it was the perfect location for their wedding!

After photographing Julia’s details, we headed out for photos with Julia and her girls. We had an almost “oops” moment when Zach emerged from the house right when we were getting ready to photograph Julia and her girls—so the girls jumped right into action and used their bouquets to shield Julia from Zach’s view.

Julia also had a special family heirloom—her grandmother’s wedding ring—that she wore for her wedding day. We made sure to get some special photos with that beautiful and sentimental piece.

The ceremony took place under a beautiful oak tree beside the pond. The cattle decided to utilize the pond to cool off and get a better view. A soft white drape was threaded through the tree branches and two silver chandeliers hung from tree. Zach and Julia exchanged their vows in front of their family and friends.

The reception took place under a large white tent lined with lights, and a chandelier hung from the center. It was a gorgeous ceremony and lively celebration as the sun set behind the hills of the farm in the distance.

Zach and Julia, I so enjoyed getting to know y’all and capture these memories for you! I know postponing your wedding wasn’t what you wanted, but the day turned out gorgeous!! I wish y’all the best as you begin this next chapter in your lives!

Josh and Ashley: 9 Oaks Farm Wedding

Josh and Ashley are one of those couples that you just love as soon as you meet. They are so down to earth and so full of joy that you can’t help but be happy when you are around them.

They met in college, began dating, and not too long after Josh proposed at the beach. Their wedding took place last night at 9 Oaks Farm in Monroe—and it was truly a perfect day for them!!

When I arrived I got to meet Ashley’s sweet sisters and friends—and y’all they were SUCH a joy to hang out with!! They were the sweetest group of girls! After photographing Ashley’s details, Ashley’s mom and her sisters helped her into her gorgeous tulle gown.

As we prepared to cross the property in the 90 degree heat, Ashley asked her coordinator, Nate, for the golf cart. When we walked outside, we didn’t see Nate—and the golf cart was parked at the door. I told Ashley I had NO idea how to drive a golf cart. Ashley probably saw the panicked look in my eyes because she volunteered to drive us (in her wedding gown!!) over to the White House where we were planning to do her bridal portraits. Luckily about that time, Nate appeared to drive us! (Honestly, I was pretty relieved! I was in a no-win situation with risking wrecking the golf cart or letting Ashley drive in her wedding gown!!)

After a sweet first look with her dad and family portraits, we worked with Ashley and her girls quickly so we didn’t keep them in the heat too long. We gave Ashley a break to freshen up before her first look, and after she cooled off we brought her out to meet her handsome groom!

Josh was emotional when he turned to see his beautiful bride. I think speechless is probably the right word, and how could be not be? Ashley was absolutely radiant!

We spent some time with portraits and finished before the ceremony with more bridal party photos.

Their ceremony was outdoors, sweet and intimate with their closest friends and family. On and her sister, Ann did a beautiful job with the floral arbor! Mason jars suspended from shepherds hooks floated above scattered rose petals. It was such a romantic setting! Josh and Ashley sealed their vows with a kiss and after family portraits, we set off to capture their “just married” portraits.

They enjoyed an intimate dinner before being introduced to the reception. When DJ Randy is in charge of the party, there is never a dull moment! He kept the crowd engaged and dancing with some great music! When it came time for the bouquet and garter toss, I have to admit I was laughing as Josh seductively unbuttoned his vest and took off his tie.

As the night came to a close, their was one more beautiful finale—on top of the sparkler send off, Randy lit up the skies with some beautiful fireworks to create an amazing memory for Josh and Ashley as their wedding day came to a close.

I am so thankful to have the opportunity to work with this amazing couple and privileged to capture these memories for them! They both have such good hearts, sweet souls, and are so full of joy—what an incredible way to begin a lasting marriage! Josh and Ashley, I hope you have an amazing honeymoon and that the first chapter of the rest of your lives is filled with beautiful memories! May God bless you and keep you both.

Finding Hope in the Storm: The Short Family

I first met this sweet family several years ago when we did a “Mommy and Me” session for Tabetha. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of working with them for family sessions. A few days ago, I noticed an email from Tabetha, but this time, when I opened it, I felt shocked. Tabetha was writing to inform me, that at the age of 35, she had received a diagnosis of breast cancer. I sat and stared at my computer for a few minutes to process it. Tabetha is 35…young, full of life, and only three years younger than me. Her kids are my kids’ ages…and honestly, it hit me pretty hard.

Tabetha asked to schedule two sessions….one as soon as possible to preserve the memories as she prepares to walk through a storm, and one when she arrived on the other side and beats this diagnosis.

We set up her session, and all day the weather was great—but you know how Georgia summers are—pop up showers can appear out of nowhere…which is exactly what happened to us when we met. At first, I was really disappointed with the weather. I LOVE bright and sunny weather and it fits my style and I wanted these to be perfect for Tabetha…but as we began to work quickly before the storm intensified, I thought how appropriate the weather was…despite dealing with a constant, light rain, dark gray skies, and thunder in the distance, this family smiled, laughed, and enjoyed this time together….and I think it symbolizes where they are right now. They are facing a storm—they are in the storm—but they are going to come out on the other side when the sun is shining…and you can be sure when we do schedule Tabetha’s next session, we are going to be certain it’s a sunny day to reflect that!

Please join me in praying for Tabetha, her husband Kyle, and their precious children Grayson and Ryleigh as they prepare to walk through the unexpected storm of breast cancer. Tabetha is a beautiful, incredible person and I know her faith and her strength will carry her through this.

“So do not fear—for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous hand.” —Isaiah 41:10

My prayers are with you all…and Tabetha—I can’t wait to schedule your next session when you beat this!!

Eric and Lindsey: Vines Park Engagement Session

There is just something special about high school sweethearts…and definitely something special about Eric and Lindsey! These two met at Brookwood High School (and even went to senior prom together!) They were so comfortable with one another that everything they did was natural, so THEM in front of the camera—they made my job SO easy! The joy they had being around one another and their laughter was just infectious—and it made my morning to get to hang out with them out at Vines Park to capture these memories for them.

As we walked around the garden paths at Vines, it was so great to get to know Eric and Lindsey. I’m pretty sure they never stopped smiling…they truly enjoyed being together. We encountered some Canadian Geese with their goslings, and Eric surprised me with his knowledge of a Heron bird standing stoically in the lake. Lindsey looked stunning in her flowy pink and white dress—it was just perfect for the garden background! (And, don’t let me leave Eric out…he looked fantastic as well!)

Eric and Lindsey are planning their wedding for next summer at the chapel at UGA, and I am beyond excited to get to work with them! These two are genuine, full of joy, and a dream to photograph. Congratulations on your engagement Eric and Lindsey—I can’t wait to hang out with y’all again!

Lorcan and Amanda: Piedmont Park Engagement

I first met Amanda when she was a bridesmaid in Alex’s wedding—Amanda was my go to bridesmaid…when I needed help or needed to relay a message to the bridal party, Amanda was on it! So, when Amanda said YES to Lorcan and reached out to me 18 months before her wedding date to book—I was so honored and SO excited to get to capture her special day!

Amanda is a journalist for the AJC and Lorcan is an engineer. They live in Atlanta, and Amanda loves Piedmont Park. That’s where they got engaged, and she often walks there—so she immediately selected that as the location for her engagement session.

The first date we had (bless Amanda’s heart…she had her make-up and hair appointments already scheduled….) fell right after Governor Kemp imposed the quarantine and the city of Atlanta was essentially shut down. We had to reschedule.

We thought for a little while we would have some rain…but when it turned to just spotty showers we both decided to risk it! I’m SO glad we did….because Amanda’s photos are beautiful!! We met Lorcan at their condo so their dog, Nugget, could be included in a few photos, and then we headed over to Piedmont Park! Amanda looked stunning in her tulle gown, and I just love the lace dress she changed into…it was so cute and classy!

I so enjoyed hanging out and laughing with these two as we walked around the park—and I’m SO excited about capturing their spring 2021 wedding!! Lorcan and Amanda, congratulations!!!

Carter and Katie: Mulberry River Engagement

What an adventure we had! Originally, we planned to shoot Carter and Katie’s engagement session at Hurricane Shoals Park. Katie really wanted a river as a backdrop for her engagement photos, and Hurricane Shoals has a pretty great one! But…neither of us considered the Memorial Day crowd, so when we arrived and saw about 500 people in the river….I knew that was NOT going to work! We went ahead with using the gorgeous field for their casual photos, and I made a phone call to a friend of mine, Beckie, whose backyard adjoins the Mulberry River. I knew how important it was for Katie to have a river in her photos…and thankfully just a few weeks ago, when I photographed Beckie’s family at the river she offered for me to use it for photo sessions.

Carter and Katie agreed, and we headed back down 85 to Braselton. On the way down, a huge dark cloud developed….and y’all, I said a prayer that the rain would hold off and we could get these photos in for this sweet couple who had already had to reschedule twice due to Covid and the weather. We hurried across Beckie’s backyard and scampered down a steep bank to get to the river.

This is a couple who can pretty much read my mind. I was amazed at how easily they fell into the poses and a few times they instincitvely knew what I was going to say before I said it! And, I love that Katie was all about getting in the water! She was an Agriculture major at UGA, so this girl is not afraid to get dirty! Just as we were getting close to finishing, we heard thunder. At that point, we are ALL in the river, and Carter and Katie were in about thigh deep. We quickly finished that round of posing and then I had them splash out as they walked toward me and we hurried onto the bank to grab towels…the rain held off!! I had so much fun laughing with them—they are such a genuine, sweet couple and they are so easy to be around!

A special thank you to Carter, who serves as a nurse in Athens—Carter, thank you SO much for all that you are doing to help during this pandemic. Know that you are both in my prayers and that so many people are so grateful for your service!! Congratulations y’all…and I can’t WAIT for your December wedding!!

Dalton and Hannah: A Downtown Monroe Engagement and Cake Tasting

When Dalton and Hannah mentioned they were going to squeeze their cake tasting in right after their engagement session since they were driving in from out of town, I suggested “why not make the cake tasting part of your engagement session??” Hannah was all for it…and it was SO much fun!

Dalton and Hannah met through a mutual friend and are planning a wedding for this fall out at the Warehouse at 9 Oaks Farm. Since we were including their cake tasting , we shot their engagement session in downtown Monroe. We had so much fun bouncing around downtown—Dalton got his favorite flavor ice cream cone (chocolate chip cookie dough) and shared (a little) with Hannah in front of Scoops—then we headed back to The Posh Cakery for their cake tasting!

The Posh Cakery goes all out for their tasting—they even included strawberry champagne! Dalton and Hannah had fun tasting the options and quickly settled on their favorites! (And…I might have taken some cupcakes to go….for my girls of course!) ;-)

Dalton and Hannah were so fun to be around—I truly enjoyed spending time with them this morning! I’m so excited to be a part of their special day…Dalton and Hannah—I can't wait to see y’all in September!! Congratulations!!

Justin and Chrissy

After postponing their engagement session TWICE due to Covid, I was thrilled when I was finally able to meet Justin and Chrissy at Vines Park for their engagement session!

When I first met Chrissy, I learned she was friends with one of my sweet 2019 brides, Kaylin, and that they had ridden horses together. We totally clicked and I am SO excited to have the privilege of working with Chrissy and Justin and capturing this special time in their lives!

As we strolled around the gardens, we ran into some Canadian geese…and Mama wasn’t happy about our proximity to her babies and let us know with some pretty violent hissing. (Did y’all know geese even did that??)

We continued walking through the beautiful grounds and despite having to wait on a few locations, we picked some great spots! Justin is interested in photography, and between chatting with him about that and with Chrissy about horses—I’m pretty sure I could have hung out with them all evening. They are both so sweet and easy to work with, and they were naturals in front of my camera!

I absolutely can’t wait for October….Chrissy is going to be a stunning bride and she’s picked a stunning venue out at Empire Mills!! Congratulations on your engagement y’all! I am beyond thrilled to work with you both!

Chuck and Lauren

When I arrived at 9 Oaks Farm for Chuck and Lauren’s engagement session, I grabbed a clear umbrella from the back of my car. It was cloudy and looked like rain…but a few minutes later, when they pulled onto the property and got out of the car, the sun came out! And, ironically, just as we were finishing their engagement session, the rain started! It was the perfect window to capture some fun memories for these two!

Chuck and Lauren might be a “divided household” since Chuck went to Georgia Tech and Lauren went to UGA (I totally relate since I’m a UGA grad and my husband went to Alabama) but that’s about the only way they are divided! It was so sweet to watch how Chuck’s face lit up every time he looked at Lauren. Lauren has a bubbly personality and she’s always smiling…and she has the MOST gorgeous pair of shoes on that we made sure to keep dry as we trekked all over the property! (Chuck may be on the quiet side, but he’s such a sweetheart…he helped Lauren every time she had to swap shoes to walk in the wet grass!)

These two will be getting married out at 9 Oaks Farm this November, and I know it’s going to be beautiful! I’m so excited to work with them and capture their special day!! Congratulations on your engagement Lauren—I hope you enjoy these last few months of planning and I can’t wait for November!!

Meet Beth: Pastor at Barrow Community Church

Beth Dickinson is not only a mom and a wife—but she’s also our pastor—the lead pastor at Barrow Community Church. BCC, as we call it, went through an unexpected pastoral change back in February, and shortly after, we learned that Beth was going to be appointed as our interim pastor. I remember the first time I spoke on the phone with Beth—she just exuded excitement and happiness and her optimism was infectious. I serve as SPR chair at BCC, so I was the first person from church who got to speak with her, and I was heavily involved in her transition to the church…so I’ve seen a lot of the hard work Beth has put in, and a lot of what she is doing behind the scenes.

After learning about Beth’s story, I was struck at how she walked into our church with her heart wide open and ready to take on the challenge of a congregation who had journeyed down a path of uncertainty in the preceding months before she arrived. Beth spent the last three years out on medical leave due to a very rare condition called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome—a condition where the nerves and blood vessels become compressed between the collar bone and the first rib. This condition can be very painful and debilitating and Beth endured a lot of pain, and six surgeries in three different states as she and her family walked the road to recovery from her condition.

After her final surgery in Boston, her condition improved to where she could finally consider going back to ministry. It just so happened that around that time, there was a little church a few miles down the road from her who was in need of a pastor.

Beth came to BCC and took on the challenges that faced her with strength, dignity and grace. She had quite a lot thrown at her…she was suddenly responsible for bringing a congregation together, helping to heal past wounds, finding a way to improve the church’s financial situation, figure out how to run the church database, website, and sign, and basically start building the church back up from the foundation level. Then, if that weren’t enough, a pandemic struck, and only a few weeks in, Beth faced an unprecedented situation that there was no guidebook for….the temporary closing of our church due to Covid19.

God’s timing is perfect, and looking back, it’s amazing to see how He aligned everything for Beth to come serve at Barrow Community Church. As Beth recovered from her surgeries, she and her family did a lot of “home church”….and this gave her a unique perspective in how to lay the groundwork for worship at home for our congregation. Each week she engages the congregation on social media, has given ideas for home communion, services, kids actives and books…and our church has flourished under her leadership.

It’s been incredible to see the “ship righted” so to speak… to see the healing of our congregation, the amazing outpouring of support for the church financially…to see Beth love our congregation and serve them so well. Beth and her family are truly an amazing blessing to our church and community. Her messages are heart-felt, and hit home every week. The joy that Beth has after the road she has walked, after all she has endured, and after the challenges she has overcome is truly amazing. I know one thing….that Beth was the answer to a lot of prayers that went up from our church—and we are truly blessed to have her.

When I found out Beth’s birthday was next month, I asked if I could do some photos for her as a birthday gift. I had so much fun (as I always do when I’m around her!) hanging out with Beth, Keith, Thomas and Jacob to capture some fun family photos for them. It seemed the perfect time to capture some memories—after all, it’s like a fresh start and a new chapter for Beth as she continues to overcome her condition and officially becomes our lead pastor July 1st. I can’t wait to see where she leads our church—I’m just thankful and blessed to be able to be a part of her ministry. Beth, your strength, courage and faith are truly inspiring. Thank you for all that you do.

Alex and Natalie: Unicoi State Park Maternity Session

The BEST part of what I do are the relationships I form with my clients…and they aren’t really clients…they are friends. When I used to be a teacher, every year and the end of the year I always felt a pang of sadness when I said good-bye to my students….and I get the same feeling when the wedding is over and my couples turn the page to start a new chapter in their lives. And just like when I was a teacher and I felt a sense of pride for my kids when I saw them succeeding in life, it’s just as rewarding when I get to see the happiness my couples are experiencing and new milestones they reach in journey!

Alex and Natalie have been one of the kindest and sweetest couples I’ve had the pleasure to work with and know. I’ve had the privilege of photographing their engagement session with their dogs, Zoey and Charlie, their wedding at In the Woods, and now their maternity session at Unicoi State Park.

As I got to know Alex and Natalie at their engagement session, I learned about their love for hiking, mountains and the woods. Alex proposed on one of their hiking trips, and the outdoors are just a part of their story together. When we were brainstorming locations for their engagement session, we settled on this place—which is actually special to me! I’ve been coming to this location for years, and my girls have grown up picnicking multiple times a year right here by the bridge. Knowing Alex and Natalie’s love for the outdoors, this mountain stream seemed the perfect spot for their session!

I was so excited to see them again—and to be honest, it was a disappointment to not be able to give them a big hug with the “social distancing” era that we are currently in. Natalie looked classically beautiful, as she always does, and Alex was handsome with the new beard he was sporting! I loved getting to catch up with them, and even though Alex isn’t fond of geese, he agreed to slip in with Natalie when the geese who photobombed us began to float down the stream!

These two are going to be amazing parents…because they are amazing people…and they are so excited to welcome their baby girl this July. Alex is going to be an awesome girl dad because he has two sisters…so I have no doubt this little girl will have him wrapped around her tiny finger in no time!

I can’t wait to keep up with them, and meet their sweet girl. I’m thankful that we keep in touch and that God brought this sweet couple into my life a few years ago—because they have become friends. Natalie and Alex, I am SO thrilled for you…congratulations!!!

Will and Katherine: A Southern Engagement

When Chasity, a mutual friend, told me about Katherine, she said “You are just going to LOVE her!” That was an understatement! I had the best time laughing and hanging out with Will and Katherine at Katherine’s family farm in Madison, Georgia.

Will and Katherine were both born and raised in Madison. Their freshman year in college, they began dating—and Katherine said they knew right away they were meant for one another. I couldn’t agree more. I was around these two for five minutes and could tell that they were meant for one another!

After my GPS took me the wrong way, Katherine and Will helped guide me back to the entrance of the farm. We both laughed about being huggers but having to social distance—and then she and Will were all smiles as we headed toward the field in the distance. The ease with which Will and Katherine interacted was so sweet and natural—it was so obvious that they are crazy about each other. We started their session in the grassy field and the wind was definitely whipping through the trees and the tall grass—but it made for some gorgeous photos! Both Will and Katherine were naturals in front of my camera!

We found a spot where the sun filtered beautifully though the Georgia pines and stopped there for some stunning photos before finishing in the open field where the moon was rising over the tree line. I am SO excited to have the privilege of working with these two—and I can’t wait for their November wedding! Congratulations Will and Katherine!!

PFAPA: How God used a Dark Time in my Life for Good

We are currently living in very uncertain times. I’ve watched my spring brides, who have planned and dreamed of their wedding days, have to put them off. I’ve watched my church close it’s doors and go to online worship. I’ve been personally impacted financially as a small business who has been forced to close, and it’s been two months since I’ve hugged my grandparents. The world seems to be shrouded in fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and so many people are discouraged.

As I was facing months without a wedding due to Covid19, I took the unanticipated time I had to go through and try to organize some of my family photos. When you are a full-time photographer, your personal photos often take a back seat…and as I was combing through them, I came across a folder entitled “PFAPA”. As I went through these photos, I was immediately reminded of a time in my life when I faced fear, uncertainty, and anxiety…but now that I am looking back on the other end of that storm, I can clearly see how God used that time for good. I don’t believe God causes bad things to happen…we live in a fallen world, and when bad things happen, we can hold on to the promise that God will walk through that time WITH us….and that He will use that difficult time for his good. Right now, in the present moment, it can be hard to see how God can use a virus for His good….but I believe that one day, looking back, we will be able to find the good— despite the pain we are currently experiencing. After coming across these photos, I felt compelled to share the story of how God used a very dark time in my life for His good…because without that dark time, I wouldn’t be a wedding photographer right now.

When my oldest daughter Natalie, was only 9 months old, she had a complex febrile seizure in my arms after a bath. There is nothing that can prepare a first time-parent for that situation—it was a moment that was seared into my memory…and one I will never forget.

At the time this happened, I was teaching at Norcross High School. I had a life plan—and that included continuing to teach until I was ready to retire. I had no idea that initial seizure and fever was the first step toward a very challenging six years, and a drastic change in the direction I anticipated my life to go.

PFAPA is a periodic fever syndrome that first came to be known in the medical field around 1990. The primary symptoms are recurring fever episodes, mouth sores/ulcers, joint pain and stomach pain. With Natalie, we navigated through months of extremely high fevers occurring every six weeks (one time she hit 106.1), febrile seizures, EEG’s, CAT scans, bloodwork, heart scans, CBC scores upwards of 35,000…it was terrifying. We could predict the day of her next fever, and the episodes would last 3-5 days. We spent a few weekends in the hospital because of her age and her through-the-roof-white blood cell counts. We saw specialists and finally got the diagnosis of PFAPA about a year after her first PFAPA fever when she was 18 months old.

When our second daughter, Emmalyn, came along, at the same exact age of 9 months, she had a high fever with a febrile seizure. We knew immediately what we were dealing with…but to be sure, Emmalyn also underwent the same medical tests that Natalie did. When the girls would have a PFAPA fever, it was absolutely terrifying. Their fevers would spike so quickly it often induced a seizure. We had to call 911 twice because the seizure lasted so long. Time seemed to stand still as we prayed and waited for the girls to breathe. Tylenol was like taking candy—it hardly impacted the fever. Motrin was the most effective, but in order to keep the fever under as much control as possible, we were directed by our pediatrician to alternate Tylenol and Motrin every three hours…which meant setting alarms through the night sometimes 4-5 nights in a row, 24 hours a day to keep the fever from spiking. When the fever did start to climb, it meant stripping the girls down, and covering them with cool, wet cloths and encouraging them to drink as much as possible. It meant almost daily trips to the pediatrician during a flare to keep tabs on their white blood cell counts…it meant trips to the ER when their fevers were 106 and two hours after Motrin still wouldn’t come down, and several instances of 2-3 nights in the hospital. We couldn’t leave the house without a seizure kit and steroid doses. Heath and I at one point went five years without a single night away because we were afraid one of the girls would have a PFAPA fever while we were gone. One day, on the way to a Norcross Gala, we got a phone call that Emmy spiked a fever. We had to turn around and go home. We scheduled family photos another time…and Emmy was completely fine when we left the house, but by the time we arrived at the park, she was suddenly weak and lethargic and when I touched her forehead she was burning up. It was a very dark, and scary time in our lives. It was exhausting…sleep wasn’t something we got much of as we bounced back and forth between their fever schedules. It was purely living in survival mode for six years straight, and while it was one of the darkest times of my life, if I hadn’t gone through it, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

When the girls were born, my family purchased my very first DSLR camera for me to take photos of them. I always loved taking photos…and as something to look forward to and a stress reliever as we were dealing with the PFAPA years, I enrolled in a photography class at UGA…it was supposed to be just one class….so I could take good photos of my girls. I had no idea when I walked into the classroom that night that I was essentially at a crossroads—and that God would nudge me down a very different path than I had been traveling.

When that first photography class was coming to an end, I decided to sign up for just one more…a portrait class. That would be it, I decided…but while enrolled in that class, my instructor saw something in me…and I had the first thought of “could I really do this professionally one day?” But then doubt crept back in. Other people were professional photographers….someone like me could never do that…I was already a teacher. I was in my thirties. It was too late for a career change and to start over…or so I thought.

As I went through that class, the thought of a possible career change kept surfacing. While I hated the thought of loosing my students, I relished the idea of a more flexible schedule as we continued to navigate through the PFAPA fevers. When the portrait class was coming to a close, I learned the photography certification program at UGA was not going to be offered again. In order for me to be able to graduate, I had to take a full course load…including four online photography classes in one summer to catch up to the rest of the graduating class. After praying about it and a lot of discussions with Heath, I decided to go for it. I graduated from that photography program, had my exhibit, and about that time had to make a decision about my teaching contract for the next year. I was torn. As I began to pray over it, one afternoon I received a weekly email from our pastor at the time that gave me the encouragement I needed to take a leap of faith. In the email, he said people want to take very measured steps….they want to see where they are stepping, but it’s when you take a leap of faith and step where you cannot see that you allow God room to really work in your life.

I felt that was God speaking to me to take a leap of faith….and despite it not making any sense financially for our family, I took a huge leap of faith that this was the direction God was calling me…I did not renew my teaching contract, and later that year I applied for a business license.

We scraped by the first year as I launched my photography business…by year two, it replaced my teaching salary. By year three, I was booking 12+ months out for weddings. This past year, in 2019, I was blessed to have my August wedding published in Southern Bride Magazine and I’ve now had to limit the number of weddings I photograph each year to ensure I can give my brides the attention and experience they deserve. It’s been amazing…it’s been a blessing beyond what I ever imagined…and had it not been for that dark time in my life, I would never be here. I would never have met the most amazing couples who fill the gap in my heart when I think about how much I miss my students. I would never have been able to have the opportunity to be a part of the lives of so many of my students by having the privilege of photographing so many special moments in their lives. And, most importantly, I would not have been able to be there for my girls as we traversed the years of PFAPA as much as I have by making this career change. It was all God…it was HIS plan and He used the darkest time in my life for good.

As far as the girls, we exhausted every possible treatment aside from surgery. Finally, when Natalie had just turned six and Emmalyn was two, we elected to have the procedure to remove their tonsils and adenoids, which showed a 90% cure rate for PFAPA patients. That’s another God story in how we found our surgeon…but after fevers every two weeks for Emmalyn, and every six for Natalie, their fevers spaced out…and now, while they still has a few flares a year, they have been much less severe and have only lasted 24 hours. Eventually, we are told they will grow out of them completely….and while I still feel dread when I hear them complain of their leg hurting (usually the first tell-tale sign that a flare will rear its ugly head the next day) I am so thankful for God’s guidance through those difficult years, and for the plan that He had for my life that I never would have imagined or pursued on my own. And right now, as our world faces a difficult time in dealing with Covid 19, I can look back at the storm my family went through, and I can see how God used it for good….and know He WILL do it again…we may not be able to see it now, but I believe when we reach the other side of this, we will.

Laine: University of Georgia Senior

I first met Laine at Norcross High School, where my husband has taught and coached for years.

Laine when on to graduate from Norcross in 2016, but she came back for her brother’s football games when he played for Norcross. I would often run into Laine or her family on the field after a game when the player and their families gathered. She always had a bright smile and was full of joy…and despite her senior year at UGA being cut short, she still had that bright smile when I met her on campus for her senior photos!

Laine has spent the past four years at UGA as a sports management major. She had a group of football players assigned to her that she had to keep up with—and even go watch them in class to make sure they stayed on task and were doing what they should be doing!

We started out in the Founders Garden where we laughed when Laine had a “Marilyn Monroe” moment when the wind picked up the skirt of her dress—then we headed to North campus and finally finished at the stadium—which was an important location to Laine! Laine donned a #7 jersey in support of her fellow Norcross grad, Lorenzo Carter, affectionately known as “Zo” who played for Norcross, then UGA, and now is playing for the New York Giants. We hung out on the patio at the stadium for her last round of photos. This girl is going to do amazing things—I’m so proud of her, and she has an amazing outlook and attitude in what has been a crazy end of her senior year. Laine is excited to return to UGA in the fall and start her master’s! Congratulations Laine, and Go Dawgs!!

Luke and Elizabeth: Mansfield Maternity Session

I have been so privileged to capture so many special moments for Luke and Elizabeth. Years ago, Elizabeth was in my 8th grade English class at Carver Middle School in Monroe, Georgia. We kept in touch over the years, and when my eldest daughter was 3, she was bitten by the horse bug and began taking riding lessons with Elizabeth. Five years later, and treks out to the Dabney farm have become a weekly part of our schedule! Elizabeth has built an amazing program with her lessons and drill team—she’s created a family atmosphere where girls can come together, work as a team, build one another up, and learn the awesome responsibility of caring for a horse. I’m so proud of what she has built. Elizabeth’s husband, Luke, is an amazing carpenter (he built my awesome bridal show wall!) and serves Walton County as a first responder/firefighter. I’ve been so blessed to be able to capture their engagement, their wedding, and now that they are expecting their fist child—their maternity session!

We shot part of the session on the Dabney farm, and then took a quick road trip up to an open field across from Luke and Elizabeth’s church for the rest! Luke and Elizabeth are excited to welcome their daughter in the coming weeks. Luke has been busy remodeling their house, and the nursery. This little girl will get to grow up right next-door to her grandparents—Ed and Colleen Dabney—and she will be SO loved! I know Luke and Elizabeth will make incredible parents—because they are incredible people. I am so excited for you both—congratulations!! I can’t wait to meet your sweet girl!

Craig and Kristin: Madison Engagement Session

Craig and Kristin’s engagement session was special—these two are getting married this fall at 9 Oaks Farm, and they requested that their kids be included so they had photos of their soon-to-be-officially blended family! I had a great time meeting them in the beautiful southern town of Madison, Georgia to capture some special moments between this couple and their family!

We started at the small park across from the James Madison Inn where the southern magnolia trees and white columns contribute to the “classy southern” feel of this beautiful town. We then moved to the walkway that leads down into the wooded area beside the pond and found a tree budded out with pink flowers.

Kristin’s daughter, Brianna, is going into the Air Force soon. She assisted me in gently shaking the tree to get some petals to fall around Kristin and Craig—and Craig’s sweet daughter immediately requested a photo of with her daddy under the “falling roses”—how precious is that?? She’s definitely a daddy’s girl!

We finished with some sunset photos of Craig and Kristin at the water fountain. I am so excited for this family during this special time in their lives—Kristin and Craig are so sweet and genuine, and were truly a joy to be around and work with! I can’t wait for their fall wedding—I know with the famous DJ Randy’s fireworks show it’s going to be awesome!! Congratulations Craig and Kristin!

Paige: University of Georgia Senior

It’s always so special for me when I get to photograph a former student…particularly this gorgeous girl!! Paige was in my senior class my last year of teaching at Norcross High School. That year, we were in a trailer out behind the school. Paige may not realize this, but she made a huge impression on me when she turned in her first essay. Not only was her writing incredibly advanced, but in her essay she told a very personal story of a struggle she went through during a very difficult time in her life. I’ll never forget reading that essay and feeling so proud of her for persevering over that situation…and I’m still so proud of her for how far she’s come. I can still see her coming to class snuggled in her cream-colored sherpa pullover that she wore even into May when the temperature was well into the 80’s. At the time Paige was in my class, my youngest daughter was dealing with a rare periodic fever syndrome, and Paige would ask about her almost every day…which meant so much to me.

Paige finished high school early and went on to study at UGA. She’s getting ready to graduate with a degree in criminal justice and has applied to law school…she hopes to be a public defense attorney so that she can help people. She has a HUGE heart for dogs…and even brought her four-legged bestie, a rescue dog named Aria, along for the photoshoot!

This gorgeous young lady is so talented, special and has a huge heart…she’s going to do amazing things with her life. Paige, there are no words for me to express how proud I am of you for all you’ve overcome, and all you’ve accomplished. I’m so thankful God put you in my classroom your senior year, because you have been a blessing in my life…and you are going to be one fabulous attorney!!

Tripp and Casey: Historic Madison engagement

Madison is just magical…the town is full of southern charm and history. Tripp grew up in Madison and lived across the street from the Thurleston House—so to get to photograph his engagement session at an area that was special to him and was a part of his story was pretty incredible!

The Thurleston House is a 202 year old antebellum home and sits quietly off the street with a vista of boxwoods drawing your eye to the house. The home is nestled among 35 acres of beautifully tended gardens, and has been home to five different families over the course of the past two centuries. It has been the site for several films and was also visited by First Lady Laura Bush. It’s a location that is yearly visited on the Madison tour of homes, and was truly a special and unique location that the owners (and Tripp’s neighbors) graciously allowed us to use for their engagement session!

Tripp and his beautiful fiancé, Casey, met while in college at Valdosta. In October, Tripp surprised Casey with a gorgeous ring and even had their families there to celebrate! Tripp’s mom, Chasity, is not only a friend of mine but an amazing wedding coordinator that I LOVE working with—so I was thrilled to get to capture this special time for her son (and y’all—she’s crazy about her future daughter-in-law!! She brags on how wonderful Casey is every time I see her!) She’s right, because Casey was an absolute sweetheart! She was so genuine and kind, and her eyes lit up every time she smiled at Tripp. We had a great time exploring the estate and stopping for photos.

I’m SO excited to work with this sweet couple and capture this time for them! I can’t wait for their October wedding! Casey and Tripp, congratulations on your engagement and I hope you enjoy this special time of engagement and wedding planning!

Brandon and Kaylynn: Empire Mills, Madison, Georgia

When I left my house to head to Empire Mills this past Saturday, it was snowing! An hour south of me in Madison, Kaylynn and her girls saw a few flurries but then it turned to rain. Despite the cold, wet weather, Kaylynn and Brandon’s day was classically beautiful and romantic!

I have to brag on Kaylynn’s bridesmaids—when I arrived in the bridal suite at Empire Mills, these gorgeous ladies already had their gowns steamed and hung on their decorative hangers!!

After photographing the details, we went to work with the guys. Luckily the rain had just stopped so we never had to pull out the umbrellas.

Kaylynn was zipped into her gorgeous lace gown, and after a first look with her bridesmaids and her dad we headed out into the cold for photos! The girls had warm fur jackets but agreed to brave the cold to do some photos without them as well for some variety. We shot her bridal portraits both with and without her fur jacket—and y’all, Kaylynn reminded me of one of the classic Hollywood Starlets like Grace Kelly, or Ingrid Bergman. She looked truly stunning!

After a quick break for Kaylynn to warm up, we went to get Brandon for their first look. As Kaylynn called his name, and he turned around, Brandon’s look of anticipation turned into shock, and then tears of joy as he watched his beautiful bride walking toward him. By the time Kaylynn reached him, they were both in tears, and I have to admit, my eyes watered a little as I photographed their reactions.

Kaylynn had requested some photos in the vines in the back of the property which really are only accessible in winter. I noticed from afar that there was a branch in the way, so my assistant, Lillie, went to get Tony, who was coordinating Kaylynn and Brandon’s wedding, to help her move it out of the way. When we got out to the location, they informed us it wasn’t a branch, but a small tree they had to move! (Thank you Tony and Lillie!!)

Kaylynn and Brandon are just so easy to be around, so they make my job easy of capturing natural portraits! When they look at one another, their faces just dissolve into smiles, and the joy they have when they are around one another is truly special!

Kaylynn went back into the bridal suite to defrost, and her attentive girls were instantly there ushering her to a chair, getting a jacket and blanket for her, and spot cleaning the hem of her gown.

Their ceremony was intimate and attended by their closest friends and family. Kaylynn walked down the aisle to Brandon on her father’s arm with her cathedral length veil flowing behind her. They exchanged vows, lit a unity candle, and sealed their promises with a kiss.

We shot a few “just married” portraits following the ceremony, and Kaylynn traded her veil for some crystal hair combs and a warm fur coat.

Their reception details were so creative—table one had a framed photo of Kaylynn and Brandon when they were one…table two, a framed photo of Kaylynn and Brandon when they were two, and so on. A donut board adorned the back wall, and the firepits were lit a dusk for s’mores.

They closed out their evening with a sparkler send off. Their day truly was a perfect reflection of them—classic, intimate, and southern. Brandon and Kaylynn have been such a joy for me to get to know, and to be able to capture these memories for them was truly a blessing for me! Kaylynn and Brandon, as you begin this amazing journey called marriage, I pray that God will fill your lives with love, laughter and blessings!

Alvin and Alysia: The Variety Works, Madison Georgia

In Georgia, “winter” usually can mean anything from weather in the teens all the way up to the 60’s. For Alysia and Alvin’s winter wedding, the weather was pretty mild and in the mid-fifties with lots of sunshine! It was such a beautiful day! When I arrived I was greeted by Harry, their dog, who was hanging out with the girls in the bridal suite. Harry was pretty skeptical of our cameras, and even after putting them on the ground so he could check them out he still wasn’t a fan.

We worked with the guys while the girls finished their hair and make-up. When we went back into the bridal suite and were getting Alysia ready to slip into her dress, Harry skittered under the skirts of her gown and peeped out at the girls who were spread out and getting into their dresses.

After getting shots of the girls, we brought Alvin out for the first look. When he turned to see Alysia walking toward him, he was full of emotion…and even Kristal and I were tearing up as we photographed that special moment.

After some portraits, Alysia slipped back into the bridal suite to freshen up for the ceremony and Kristal and I headed to capture the ceremony and reception details. Bouquets of Baby’s Breath lined the aisle and a cake surrounded by cupcakes, donuts and macaroons adorned the rustic cart.

When it came time for Alysia to make her grand entrance, she appeared at the top of the stairs and glided down to her father who escorted her to Alvin. They exchanged vows they had written to one another and Alysia’s brother, who was acting as the officiant, pronounced them man and wife.

After family photos and another round of “just married” photos of Alysia and Alvin, it was time for the reception. Alvin escorted his beautiful bride into the room for their first dance. The evening was lively with music and dancing, and Alysia and Alvin ended their evening with a sparkler send off.

This sweet family was a joy to work with! Alysia and Alvin, I wish you every blessing as you begin this amazing journey of marriage! It was a privilege for me to capture these memories for you!
