It was a hot July afternoon for Derek and Kelsey’s Lake Oconee engagement session but they were such troopers! When I first spoke with Kelsey over the phone, I learned that she was living and going to school for physical therapy in Colorado. Derek, her fiancé, had just taken a job in California and they were facing a semester separation while Kelsey finished school. Kelsey’s mentioned that she had grown up visiting her grandparents, who live on Lake Oconee, and I could tell from the way she spoke about them that they were special to her and that this place was special to her…so special that she had chosen it as the location for their wedding.
She and Derek were flying in for the Fourth of July, and we were able to coordinate our schedules so that we could meet and I could shoot their engagement session at the lake before they caught their flight out of Atlanta. I downloaded a couple of podcasts to listen to on the drive down, got a frosted lemonade from Chick-fil-et (because did I mention it was hot y’all?) and headed to Reynold’s Marina.
Kelsey’s family was the sweetest! I was met with hugs, and during our session her mom and grandmother made sure that I had water and stepped into the air conditioner between transitions. Kelsey and Derek were flying out and early afternoon worked best for their schedule—and even though we were shooting in bright sun and 90+ degree temps, they were all smiles and it was evident that they just loved being together. Kelsey and Derek met in the 6th grade and began dating in high school, and they had a comfortable ease about them that was so genuine and sweet that they made my job easy behind the camera! We started shooting at her grandmother’s beautiful lake home and then rode over to their ceremony location at Reynold’s Marina and hung out there to finish the session. I absolutely loved my time with them, and I am so excited to capture their day out at Lake Oconee in April! Congratulations on your engagement, and Kelsey—I know after this weekend you are ready to get back to Colorado and cooler temperatures!
